FAQ
We get these questions every week. The answers come from our own purchases and our own gym floors — not from a sales pitch.
An advertised Alibaba price can indeed look attractive. But it is not the same as the total cost of having a machine delivered to your gym — and that total cost is how offers should be compared.
The price shown on Alibaba is often an EXW or FOB price. EXW is the price at the factory gate; FOB includes delivery to the port of departure and loading onto the vessel. Your budget must also cover sea freight, insurance, any applicable import duty, port and customs-clearance fees, and transport to your gym. International import guides recommend allowing at least 30–40% extra on top of the factory price, and our own experience shows that on a smaller order, the delivered price of a Chinese machine in Estonia can be close to twice its Alibaba price. That is why we always compare the net total cost of a specific package, not just the advertised price of one machine.
And then you are only getting started: the machine has to be assembled by you, the warranty means exchanging emails with a factory on the other side of the world, and every problem is yours to solve.
In our experience, no — and this is experience paid for with our own money, not theory. Two reasons:
1. Spare parts. When something breaks on a cheap machine (and in our experience it breaks much sooner than on a quality European machine), you discover that a spare part with shipping and customs costs almost as much as a new machine — and delivery can take months. Even Chinese manufacturers' own reviews admit that after-sales support for small buyers is limited, and recommend buying spare parts up front because they are hard to get later. For a gym, a machine standing idle for months means lost revenue and unhappy members.
2. Lifespan. In OGGYM's experience, lower-cost commercial strength equipment lasts about 3–5 years even with proper maintenance. A quality European machine serves our active gym for 10+ years. Spread the price over the years and the "cheap" machine is actually the more expensive one — and that is before repair costs and downtime even enter the picture.
In our experience, often not — for two reasons.
The weight stacks are lighter. On many Chinese machines the weight stacks are sized for smaller, lighter users. A stronger European lifter simply runs out of stack — and a machine an advanced lifter cannot load properly is half a solution in a commercial gym.
The biomechanics are often copied wrong. Many Chinese machines are copies of top European brands that look right in pictures and even on the gym floor. But the movement path, the angles and the strength curve — the things that make the right muscle do the work — are often off in the copy. Even Chinese industry comparisons admit that the biomechanics and ergonomics of some manufacturers' strength machines are rudimentary. The result: the exercise "doesn't work". A beginner cannot feel the right muscle, and a professional feels immediately that something is wrong. The machine may be beautiful, but if it does not train the muscle, it is just an expensive metal sculpture.
No. It means you are not paying for the name.
A premium brand's price often includes a huge marketing budget, sponsorships, showrooms around the world and chains of middlemen. The customer pays for all of it, but none of it automatically makes the machine better. Our experience has also shown that beautiful design and a famous logo do not automatically guarantee the best biomechanics — we have tested very expensive machines that look superb but did not fully convince us in the exercise.
Our logic is simple: the price has to be reasonable and the machine has to do the right work. When those two things are in place, the logo does not matter.
Because we do not pick them from a catalogue — we go to Spain and test them on site, and not alone. We take experienced gym coaches, competitive athletes, and people of different heights and training levels with us, so that we can test machines with very different bodies and abilities. If a machine works for both a beginner and an elite competitor, and for both a 160 cm and a 195 cm lifter, that gives us strong confidence.
We are not only testers: we give Fitland feedback on new machines, and it goes straight to product development. That is exactly why we chose this manufacturer — in our experience, every manufacturer, including the most expensive, has strong and weaker models. The difference is what the manufacturer does with feedback. Fitland actually listens: machines that need improving are developed further, and the range keeps evolving based on real user feedback. That is the quality we value most in a manufacturer.
No — and that is probably our most unusual selling point. If a machine does not fully convince us in testing, we tell you honestly and recommend something else instead. Even when it is in the catalogue of the manufacturer we represent.
Fortunately such cases are few, and thanks to feedback those machines improve too, but the principle stands: we only sell what we stand behind. Our goal is not a one-off deal but a gym that runs for years — because you are our best advertisement.
Because we measure it in our own gym every day. We regularly change equipment in our Pärnu gym, track how much each machine is actually used, and remove machines with a low usage rate. This lets us see from data, rather than gut feeling, what suits members at our Pärnu gym.
For you this means that when we equip your gym, we will not offer a single machine that would end up gathering dust in the corner. Every square metre of a gym has to earn — an unused machine in the corner is the most expensive machine you can own.
We do not have to guess — Chinese and Fitland strength machines operate side by side in our Pärnu gym, used by the same members under the same load. That is a direct comparison few sellers can offer.
Based on our continuous maintenance experience at OGGYM Pärnu, the result is unambiguous: Chinese strength machines need several times more maintenance. Cables, bearings, upholstery and adjustment mechanisms constantly need tightening, greasing or replacing. Fitland strength machines are more stable and more robust: our maintenance technicians spend several times less time on them, and the machines simply keep working, month after month.
For a gym owner this means three things that go straight to your wallet and your nerves:
And as a bonus: these machines are not only durable, they also look good on the floor — and looks sell memberships, which should not be underestimated.
Because we have made all these mistakes ourselves. We have been gym owners for 15 years. In that time we have bought, tested and written off all kinds of equipment — and we still keep trying new things: a good price keeps tempting us to buy and test, but sometimes we regret it just as quickly. So the comparison with quality machines runs in front of our eyes every single day.
Today, under our current brand, we have built one of Estonia's most popular gyms in Pärnu, known across the country, and we are planning new clubs — with exactly the same equipment we sell. We do not put anything in our own gyms that we would not trust every day. That is our entire quality control: if a machine cannot take the load of our own gym, we do not sell it.
Yes — and we talk about it openly, because it is probably the most useful lesson we can pass on.
When we started out, we could not bring ourselves to buy the pricier machines. The cheaper price felt like a sensible decision: the gym filled up faster and the budget looked good on paper. Today, years later, we are replacing those same machines one after another every year — and every replaced machine is a reminder that the 10–30% price win was not a win but a deferred cost with interest.
Now we know what real value is: not the cheapest price and not the most expensive logo, but what you actually get for your money — a machine that works correctly, lasts, and does not demand constant attention. On paper the pricier machine takes a bigger bite out of the budget, but in the long run the cheap machine bites back: repairs, downtime, replacements and, in the end, buying a new machine anyway.
So our advice comes not from a salesman but from a gym owner who has made this mistake himself: buy the right thing the first time. Paying twice is the most expensive way to save.
Fitland prices are competitive. Compare the complete net total cost of a specific package, plus warranty, lead time and service — then come to Pärnu to try the equipment. Our machines are under real load in a real gym every day — hundreds of workouts a day. Do the exercise and feel the difference for yourself. That is a better argument than any single price tag.
